LASIK is a popular procedure to correct vision for people who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. These vision conditions prohibit light that enters the eye from properly focusing on the retina (the back of the eye) so you have blurry vision at certain distances. This is due to the shape of the cornea (the clear front part of the eye).
- Nearsightedness: light focuses in front of the retina causing blurry distance vision
- Farsightedness: light focuses behind the retina causing blurry up-close vision
- Astigmatism: light is scattered causing vision that is blurry at all distances
All laser vision correction surgeries work by reshaping the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) so light traveling through it is properly focused onto the retina. Only a tiny amount of corneal tissue is removed to create a more ideal shape.
