Cataracts Under 40

cataractsThink cataracts only happen to seniors?  That is not always the case.

Cataracts can occur in people under the age of 40 and are not uncommon for people in their thirties.  A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye which lies between the pupil and the iris.  For those over 40, it is the most common cause of vision loss.  For those under 40, it can cause problems as well.

Cataracts start out small, usually having little or no effect on your vision.  As a cataract worsens, you may notice impairment with night driving, unusual sun glare or other symptoms.  Some of the risk factors for cataracts, at any age, include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Ultraviolet radiation / sun exposure
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Family History
  • Statin medications

Cataract surgery is typically successful at restoring vision for those who have vision impairment.  If you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts or suspect you may have a cataract, please contact The Eye Clinic Surgicenter in Billings to schedule a  cataract consultation.
