LASIK Surgery Under 18
The old saying goes that “you’re never too old,” but are you ever too young? In the case of LASIK surgery, you might be.
Can LASIK surgery be performed on children under the age of 18? Eyes are still developing all the way up to the age of 21. Until then, vision continues to change. Most ophthalmologists are reluctant to perform LASIK surgery on anyone under 18. In fact, the FDA has not approved LASIK surgery for patients under the age of 18.
Rather than LASIK, parents should seek conventional forms of treatment, such as contact lenses and eyeglasses. It should be noted, however, that researchers are studying the effects of LASIK on children who suffer from rare vision problems or eye diseases. It could be that at some point in the future, LASIK will become acceptable for treating people under 18.
