LASIK vision correction is performed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
How LASIK Works
Amazingly, LASIK takes just minutes to perform. It’s an outpatient procedure that involves three steps:
- Creation of a corneal flap
- Corneal reshaping
- Flap replacement
Microkeratome Method for the Corneal Flap
A hinged corneal flap is created by making a small incision on the cornea. This flap is lifted and folded over so the doctor can perform the corneal reshaping step on the underlying corneal tissue. Most patients report a feeling of pressure during this step, but it is not typically described as painful.
Our LASIK Technology for Corneal Reshaping
At The Eye Clinic Surgicenter we use the VISX STAR S4 IR® excimer laser system for corneal reshaping. By removing very precise sections of corneal tissue with an excimer laser, light that enters your eye is able to focus in the right spot on the retina – rather than in front of or behind the retina. The result is clear vision for most patients.
Flap Replacement
After the corneal reshaping, the flap is repositioned on the cornea where it heals naturally, without stitches. After resting at home after the procedure, most patients wake up to a world with clearer vision the next morning.
