What If My Vision Changes After LASIK?

What If My Vision Changes After LASIK?

For most people, LASIK is the solution to clear, crisp vision without the need for prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. After LASIK surgery, it is normal to experience fluctuations in your vision; however, you should notice significant improvement in the clarity and sharpness of your vision overall within days, if not hours, of laser eye surgery. It is not uncommon for some patients to have blurred vision after a LASIK procedure, especially in the first few hours post-surgery. Additionally, patients may notice halos or glares around headlights and streetlights. If vision does not steadily improve, it is possible that you are noticing an abnormal complication of the surgery that could be caused by dry eye syndrome, a broken blood vessel in the eye or a subconjunctival hemorrhage. These conditions should resolve on their own within time and should not interfere with vision. Another cause of blurriness could be that a full refractive correction was not achieved and a follow up procedure may be required to effectively achieve clear vision. In any case, The Eye Clinic Surgicenter advises contacting your LASIK surgeon as soon as possible to address your unresolved symptoms.

If your concerns are not related to the effects immediately after surgery but “what if my vision changes after LASIK?” meaning could your vision quality decrease over time requiring a need to return to prescription glasses or contacts, the answer is yes, it is possible. Although LASIK surgery permanently reshapes the cornea thereby correcting the refractive errors of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, the eyes are still subject to the effects of aging. The natural aging of the eyes is referred to as presbyopia and there is nothing, not even LASIK, that can prevent its development. The likelihood of vision regression after LASIK is rare, fewer than 1% so if vision changes after LASIK, presbyopia is the likely cause.
If vision changes after LASIK include blurred vision, you should schedule a comprehensive eye exam with your eye doctor to determine any eye conditions or diseases such as glaucoma or cataracts that may worsen if left undiagnosed and untreated.
